What is Helium Leak Detection?

Imagine trying to find a pinhole leak in a vacuum system or a fuel tank. Water tests take forever, and bubbles aren’t sensitive enough. That’s where helium steps in.

Helium Leak Detection is the gold-standard method for finding microscopic leaks in sealed components.

Why Helium Works

  • Helium atoms are tiny and inert—they slip through leaks that trap air or water.
  • A mass spectrometer “sniffs” helium with sensitivity down to 1×10⁻¹² mbar•L/s.
  • Two methods: spray helium on an evacuated part (vacuum test) or trace escaping helium from a pressurized part (sniffer test).
